Decision week: prices, ads, and a 15-minute security pass
Owners are still raising prices while sales soften. Check Google Ads as AI Max rolls out, update Chrome against an exploited zero-day, and get Sep 15 cash lined up.
Originally written for owners on September 10, 2026. Figures and deadlines reflect that date; some have since changed.
Owner signal
This fortnight is a decision week, not a waiting week.
Small business optimism cooled in August (NFIB: 98.7). Labor quality is still the top problem. Inflation and taxes are tied for second. Net 31% of owners raised selling prices last month, and another big share plans more. Sales trends softened. Energy and trade costs are still in the stack.
At the same time, three calendar items land next week: Q3 estimated taxes on Sep 15, the Fed meeting Sep 15 to 16, and Google's ongoing AI Max ad upgrades through September. Plus a real Chrome zero-day that is already being exploited.
Thesis: protect cash and coverage. Do not wait for clarity.
What to do with pricing and cash
NFIB's August survey is clear enough for Main Street. Hiring plans exist. Qualified people do not. Fuel, materials, and insurance stay expensive. Many owners are still raising prices even as sales feel softer.
Practical moves this week:
- Re-check trip fees, minimums, and material language on estimates. If suppliers are floating fuel or duty surcharges, get that in writing now.
- Put Sep 15 estimated tax on the calendar before the weekend. Underpayment penalties accrue even when the year ends fine. Confirm safe-harbor vs annualized with your CPA if cash is tight.
- Do not plan the next equipment loan or refinance on a near-term rate cut. Funds rate is still 3.50% to 3.75%. August jobs came in stronger than expected. The Fed meets Sep 15 to 16. Assume today's cost of money until they move.
Customers are still spending when the offer is sharp and someone answers. They are not spending because they feel great.
Google Ads is changing without asking
Through September, Search campaigns that use Automatically Created Assets or campaign-level broad match are being moved to AI Max. Google says settings will "mirror" what you had. Treat that as a claim to verify.
Risk for local service advertisers: broader matching, AI-written text, and spend on queries you never meant to buy. Ads can invent a service, a price, or a service area. Your front desk then spends the afternoon unsaying it.
This week:
- Open Google Ads and find campaigns touched by AI Max
- Export search terms and lock brand negatives
- Confirm geo, call tracking, and landing pages
- Optimize to a real call or booked appointment, not a page view
If you are not sure what changed, screenshot baselines now so you can compare next week.
Security: 15 minutes that actually matter
1. Update Chrome, Edge, and Brave now
Google patched a Chrome zero-day on Sep 3 (CVE-2026-85046). An exploit is in the wild. Chromium browsers (Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera) need Stable 152.0.7977.82/.83 (or newer). On every work device: Help, About, update, restart. Ask your MSP to push it. Do not wait for a staged rollout.
2. VPN, MFA, backups
CISA and the FBI warned about Gunra ransomware hitting professional services, retail, construction, healthcare-adjacent shops, and more. Common path: exposed VPN or firewall, weak or default passwords, then stolen files and encryption.
Plain English checklist:
- Patch VPN and firewall firmware
- MFA on email, VPN, and banking
- Confirm an offline or immutable backup exists
- Test restore of one critical folder this week
- If you get a ransom note, do not negotiate alone. Call your MSP, IC3/FBI, or CISA (1-844-Say-CISA)
Also keep a low-tech fallback for the next Microsoft 365 hiccup: phone tree, printed day sheet, alternate way to reach customers.
Sentient Partners angle
Business Strategy. Intelligent Systems. Measurable Results.
If coverage is the leak (missed calls, slow follow-up, no-shows), fix that before you add another hire or another AI subscription. Design the workflow around booked work. Measure recovered appointments and speed-to-lead for 30 days. Then decide what to expand.
We help local businesses pick and set up the right tools for answering inquiries, following up, and booking the work.
