Fed hiked: Q4 cash, AI Max cleanup, and browser updates
The Fed raised the funds range to 3.75% to 4%. Plan Q4 cash and coverage, clean up Search campaigns after Google's AI Max migration, and update browsers before October Patch Tuesday.
Originally written for owners on October 1, 2026. Figures and deadlines reflect that date; some have since changed.
Owner signal
The Fed did not cut. On Sep 16 the FOMC raised the federal funds target range by 1/4 point to 3.75% to 4% (12-0 vote). That is the first hike since 2023. Inflation remains elevated in the Fed's own words. Credit lines, equipment notes, and variable-rate working capital just got a little more expensive. Price any refinance or big purchase at the posted range, not at a hoped-for cut.
August CPI is still the latest print (next release Oct 14). BLS: all items +0.4% seasonally adjusted on the month; +3.4% over the year. Gasoline +3.9% on the month. Energy +2.1% on the month and +16.3% over the year. Core (less food and energy) +0.3% on the month and +2.4% over the year. Trip costs and material quotes still need a hard look before holiday demand.
Jobs: August nonfarm payrolls rose 162,000; unemployment held at 4.1% (BLS). The September employment report posts Fri Oct 2 at 8:30 AM ET. NFIB's August Main Street read (optimism 98.7, sales net -9%, hiring plans net 17%) is still the latest; the September NFIB drops around Oct 13.
Thesis: money costs more. Lock Q4 cash and coverage first. Clean the Search campaigns Google just migrated. Confirm browsers and September Windows updates before the next Patch Tuesday.
Q4 ops: coverage, AI Max after Sep 30, pricing
October is when owners either plan holiday hours or invent them week by week. Soft Main Street sales in the August NFIB reading argue for coverage and cash discipline over headcount hope.
On hiring: hire for a measured gap (booked jobs you are turning away or after-hours calls you miss), not because the inbox feels busy. Log one week of missed calls and after-hours inquiries before you post another job.
On ads: Google's Sep 1 to 30 automatic migration for Search campaigns that used Automatically Created Assets or campaign-level broad match is now past the window. Dynamic Search Ads stay on a later clock (February 2027). If your account was in that September cohort, assume broader matching and AI-written text are on unless you checked. Local risk is spend on queries you never meant to buy, inventing a city or service you do not offer, and front-desk time correcting the ad.
This fortnight's ops checklist:
- Open every Search campaign that may have migrated. Confirm AI Max, search term matching, and text customization settings match what you want.
- Export the last 14 days of search terms. Add negatives for out-of-area, DIY, and services you do not sell.
- Spot-check ad text and landing pages. If the ad invents a price, service, or city, pause that path and fix it.
- Optimize to a booked call or appointment, not a click.
- Set holiday hours, after-hours coverage, and a cash runway target for Oct to Dec before you raise ad spend.
AI used well here means answering, booking, and following up on real local demand. AI used poorly means writing ads that spend your money and burn trust.
Fuel and materials: gasoline's August jump (+3.9% on the month; +27.4% over the year in the BLS gasoline index) is still in trip costs. Re-check trip fees, minimums, and surcharge language on estimates before the next busy weekend and before holiday overtime.
Security: browsers first, then plan for Oct 13
Skip the CVE laundry list. What matters for a shop with Windows PCs and email:
Two early-September Chrome Stable updates fixed flaws Google said were already exploited in the wild (CVE-2026-85046 in the Sep 3 build; CVE-2026-87491 in the Sep 8 Chrome 153 build). CISA put both on the Known Exploited Vulnerabilities list. Federal remediation deadlines for those KEV entries have already passed. Treat "update the browser this week" as the shop rule, not optional.
September's Windows cumulative updates (including the two exploited Windows flaws from Sep 8 Patch Tuesday that CISA flagged with a Sep 22 due date) should already be installed. If any work PC skipped that pass, finish it now. Microsoft's next Patch Tuesday is typically Tue Oct 13. Plan a short install window then; do not wait for a slow staged rollout on machines that hold books, customer files, or VPN access.
Plain English checklist:
- Chrome, Edge, and Brave on every work PC: Help, About, update, restart. Confirm the browser actually relaunched on the new build.
- Ask your MSP to confirm September Windows cumulative updates are installed on books, payroll, and VPN machines.
- Put Oct 13 on the calendar for the next Windows Update pass.
- Keep MFA on email, VPN, banking, and payroll.
- Confirm an offline or immutable backup exists. Test restore of one critical folder.
If something looks wrong after a patch (odd login prompts, locked files, ransom note), do not negotiate alone. Call your MSP, IC3/FBI, or CISA (1-844-Say-CISA).
Sentient Partners angle
Business Strategy. Intelligent Systems. Measurable Results.
Rates are higher. Holiday demand is coming. That is a bad month to buy another tool or another body to paper over missed calls and noisy ads.
Start by measuring what already comes in the door: percent of inquiries answered, speed-to-lead, booked jobs from those contacts, and ad spend that produced a booked call (not a click). Fix coverage and search-term waste first. Then decide whether the next dollar goes to hiring, ads, or systems.
We help local businesses pick and set up the right tools for answering inquiries, following up, and booking the work.
