Growth without a new hire still has a cost.

Growth without a new hire still has a cost.

Bluevine surveyed 729 U.S. small business owners for its Lean Team Economy report. Sixty percent said they are actively trying to grow. Forty percent have paused hiring or kept the team intentionally small over the past year.

That math can look smart on a payroll line. It often lands somewhere else.

Sixty-five percent said running lean hurt the business or their own well-being. The most common sacrifice was the owner's ability to take time off. Burnout came next.

Automation can carry real work. It does not put a day back on the owner's calendar by itself.

Before you decide the next role is a tool instead of a person, write down which week this quarter the owner is actually off. If the answer is none, the lean plan is incomplete.
